On Sunday, Nina Davuluri was announced as Miss America 2014. However, her title win did not come without insult. Many individuals took to social media to criticize the fact that Davuluri is of Indian heritage. In response to the backlash, Davuluri stated “I have to rise above that [...] I always viewed myself as first and foremost American.” Note: Davuluri is the first woman of Indian decent to win Miss America.
