Educated at Queen's College in Georgetown, Guyana, Lionel initially studied medicine at St Thomas' Hospital in England, but switched to legal studies when he realized surgical procedures made him squeamish. Lionel also worked in England as a barrister, and eventually became a jurist on the Guyanese Supreme Court. He earned his Guiness Book status by getting 245 successive murder-charge acquittals between 1940-1985.
