The country of Freedonia is in the middle of a financial crisis and on the brink of revolution. In order to gain a bail-out from the wealthy Mrs Teasdale, the government appoints Rufus T Firefly as its president. However, Mr Firefly shuns the pomp and pretentiousness of government; along with the prudence and rationality of it too. Meanwhile, the neighbouring country of Sylvania is plotting to overthrow Freedonia and sends Pinky and Chicolini to spy on Firefly. War seems inevitable. Groucho Marx is in his element as slick, fast talking business manager Otis B. Driftwood, who spends his time playing up to arts patron Mrs. Claypool (classic Marx Bros. foil Margaret Dumont). When he sees that she's willing to pony up $1,000 a night to have pompous Lassparri (Walter Woolf King) sing, he wants a piece of the action. The opera company is traveling from Europe to NYC on a ship. Ricardo, Tomasso and Fiorello sneak on board as stowaways. One of my favorite scenes shows lots of people cram into one cabin on the ship. Circumstance soon throws together sly Fiorello (Chico) and goofy Tomasso (Harpo), (This is 1935, Mussolini objected to them making fun of Italians), as they become determined to help out young lovers & aspiring Opera Stars Rosa (Kitty Carlisle) and Ricardo (Allan Jones). Dr. Hugo Hackenbush, Tony, and Stuffy try and save Judy's Sanitarium by winning a Big Race with her boyfriend's horse. There are a few problems. Hackenbush runs a high-priced clinic for the wealthy, who don't know that the degree that he holds is in veterinary medicine. Great moments include: Groucho's telephone conversation with Whitmore (Leonard Ceeley) and of course the medical examination of Emily Upjohn (Margaret Dumont) the wealthy and most important patient at the clinic, by Dr. Hackenbush and his colleagues. Groucho is at his razor-sharp best in Animal Crackers, with almost every one-liner dripping with comedic insults and sarcasm. Chico and Harpo perfectly add to the mayhem. Captain Spaulding (Groucho Mark), the noted explorer, returns from Africa and attends a gala party held by Mrs. Rittenhouse (Margaret Dumont). A painting displayed at that party is stolen, and the Marxes (with Zeppo as Spaulding's assistant) they attempt to help recover it.. Have you seen "Animal Crackers?"

The Marx Brothers try and put on a play before the Hotel Management discover they have run out of money. To confuse the issue they pretend that the play's author has contracted some terrible disease and can't be moved. The Hotel Manager (Groucho's brother-in-law) begs them to pay their bill and leave the Hotel. They employ various tactics to evade payment. In an especially memorable scene the brothers put on multiple layers of clothes as they prepare to decamp their hotel room without paying the bill. Watch for a young Anne Miller and Lucille Ball, who plays Groucho's girlfriend. Originally a stage play, the setting shows its origins, but this is vintage Marx Brothers.
