Many of us grew up reading the Archie comics -- I know I did -- and you may be surprised to know that Mickey Rooney, (the actor who appeared in silent films as early as 1926, the famous Andy Hardy films, and also in classic "talkies" like National Velvet and Pete's Dragon) was the inspiration for the character of Archie Andrews. Well, actually the Andy Hardy movies were an inspiration for John L Goldwater to have a comic book about a relatable normal person, and that's how Archie and his friends were created. Just one look at Archie and Mickey side by side, and it's pretty clear that he was a big inspiration for this character. Do you think the story behind this inspiration is true?

It's a pretty safe bet that most lovable (and no so lovable) comic book characters were based on real life people. Many of us are familiar with the story of how comic actor W.C. Fields was the inspiration for very neat-sighted Mr. Magoo. It was often thought the character was based on the actor, although often refuted, but the creator of the comic, Pete Burness did reveal that he and his colleagues studied Fields' performances for ideas later on. Do you think this character was based on W.C. Fields?

Here are a few more inspirations. The famous Jessica Rabbit was actually inspired by three movie stars: Rita Hayworth, Veronica Lake, and Lauren Bacall. First appearing as Roger Rabbit's wife in the 1998 animated feature Who Framed Roger Rabbit? the character was quite a controversial one; with many upset with the curvaceous, sometimes slutty figure and suggestive dialogue. Do you see the resemblance?

Movie star and comedian Red Skelton is known for having created a wide array of characters, but one of the characters he'll be known the most for is Yosemite Sam, the swashbuckling, mustachioed, gun-wielding, red-haired, rooting-tooting cowboy; a cartoon that was not made by him, but inspired by another one of his characters, Deadeye. Did you know this?

Popeye is a cartoon that has probably inspired millions of children worldwide to eat their spinach, but few know the real-life inspiration behind the 'one-eyed, pipe-smoking, macho sailor'. Franky 'Rocky' Fiegel was from Popeye creator Elzie Crisler Segar's hometown and was the man behind the famous sailor's character, while other characters that featured in the Popeye cartoons also supposedly inspired by Segar's hometown friends. Do you see the resemblance, and did Popeye inspire YOU to eat spinach?
I see the resemblance and yes, I was inspired by Popeye to eat spinach
