Antarctica is the only continent without snakes. Snakes are cold-blooded animals and cannot tolerate extreme cold. They are found on every other continent, but there are some places where they are not native, including: Ireland, New Zealand, Cape Verde and Hawaii. Discover Wildlife is my source for this survey.

Looking like a mythological dragon, the Spiny bush viper of Central Africa owes its unusual appearance to its keeled scales. Keeled scales are reptile scales that, rather than being smooth, have a ridge down the center that may or may not extend to the tip of the scale, making them rough to the touch. These scales give it excellent camouflage in their rainforest habitats. Have you ever visited a rainforest?

While technically this snake is more of a glider than a flier, flying snakes can be nightmare inducing, even if you're not afraid of snakes. There are five species of flying snake in Asia, which can glide for about 100 meters. They are the only known limbless vertebrates that can glide through the air. They like to eat rodents, bats, birds, and lizards. Would you run, screaming if this airborne beastie came gliding at you?

The Malagasy leaf-nosed snake is a non-venomous snake endemic to Madagascar and it's not known why they have such weird noses, apart from helping them camouflage. Madagascar's unique biodiversity and isolation from other continents have allowed rare species to flourish and evolve. Did you know that about 150,000 of the 200,000 known species on Madagascar are endemic, meaning they are found nowhere else on Earth.?

The Spider-tailed horned viper is a venomous snake, in the family Viperidae and genus Pseudocerastes. The species is endemic to western Iran and over the border region with Iraq. It is believed this tail attracts birds looking for a quick spidery meal - but instead they become the meal. Are you afraid of snakes?
