DAWGS in Prison (DAWGS is an acronym for Developing Adoptable dogs With Good Sociability), a program at the Gulf Correctional Institution in Wewahitchka, Florida, takes in unwanted and often abused dogs. Inmates socialize them and train the dogs in basic obedience, so they'll be able to fit into new families when they are adopted. Inmates who participate in the program learn skills as trainers and handlers, and live with the dogs in a special work camp. The program benefits both the inmate/trainers and the dogs, both who get a new chance in life and a new sense of purpose. Do you think a program like this sounds like a great idea?

This program is only one of several programs that give inmates a chance to develop new skills, bond with animals and perhaps develop a usable skill once they are released. How many of these programs have you heard about?

Prison Pet Partnership Program at Washington State Corrections Center for Women. Launched in 1981, prison inmates are trained to raise puppies, socialize them, and train them for service to disabled people. The dogs come from animal shelters. Those that don't quite make the grade to work as a service dog are trained in obedience and offered to the public for adoption. The program also serves as vocational training for inmates, who can earn certification in pet training and grooming.

The House With A Heart Senior Animal Sanctuary, located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, was started by Sherry Lynn Polvinale and her husband in 2006, to give older, unwanted senior pets a home and love in their golden years. For nearly thirty years, the couple had been rescuing dogs and cats that people gave up due to their advanced years and health problems. It got too difficult to find good homes for these aging pets, so the couple decided to start their retirement home for these pets. Her husband has since passed away, but Sherry continues the home, along with about 55 volunteers who come in to take care of the pets. What do you think of this idea?

Research tells us that companion animals, such as cats and dogs, can help improve the physical and mental health, provide friendship for lonely seniors, and help reduce depression in our aging population. However, sometimes caring for a younger animal can be tiring and difficult for seniors. Many programs have paired seniors with senior pets, dogs and cats that have already been trained, and are often more calmer and gentler. Seniors For Seniors Pet Adoption Program, which pairs seniors over 60 years of age with mature pets, is only one of many programs. Have you heard of similar programs in your area?
