The 1990s were remembered as a time of strong economic growth, steady job creation, low inflation, rising productivity, economic boom, and a surging stock market that resulted from a combination of rapid technological changes and sound central monetary policy. Most of us can remember the 90s, and many of us remember celebrating the new year, December 31, 1999, and wondering if all the computers and clocks would go crazy -- Y2K fever! The 90s ended with hysteria around Y2K, and the uncertainty people feared when the clocks rang in the New Year and new decade of 2000. The Y2K bug was a computer flaw, or bug, that may have caused problems when dealing with dates beyond December 31, 1999. Engineers shortened the date because data storage in computers was costly and took up a lot of space. As a result, there was immense panic that computers would be unable to operate when the date descended from "99" to "00". Everything from banks, to airports, to national security was imagined to be threatened. The reason why it wasn't as bad as some forecasted was largely due to the vast amounts of money thrown at the problem (between $200 billion and $600 billion), and the engineers and technicians working on it. There were some minor glitches, but in most cases, the transition from 1999 to 2000 went off without any major upsets. Do you remember Y2K and what you were feeling?

And the 90s, of course, was full of really strange stories, although for some the chase of O.J. Simpson was top on that list. How many of these other ones do you remember?
June of 1995, a Virginia woman named Lorena Bobbitt, fed up with her reportedly abusive husband, cut off his penis with a kitchen knife while he was sleeping. She then got into her car with the severed appendage, drove away and tossed it into a field. Surgeons reattached it to her husband, John Wayne Bobbitt, during an operation that took more than nine hours. He later starred in porn movies -- because this wasn't weird enough already. The episode shocked the world, kept comedians in punchlines for months and inspired a new verb, "Bobbitted." And for men everywhere, OUCH...

If you were a parent to a child in the 90s, you may have been given the heavy responsibility of watching over your child's Tamagotchi. These little digital pets needed constant care and feeding, or else... Some people even capitalized on this craze by offering Tamagotchi day cares (really) and schools every where banned them so students could concentrate on their schoolwork. These have actually come back in fashion, so parents these days better be careful!

Schoolyards became trading centres for the cards, children everywhere rushed home to watch the shows, and well, the Halloween costumes were a given. But this fashion trend was so unflattering and ridiculous, you wonder why it was even a trend...oversized (and we do mean oversized) jeans. JNCO jeans were briefly a thing. These denim atrocities made bell bottoms look like skinny jeans and were the perfect wardrobe if you wanted to, say, smuggle a small family inside your clothes.
