All three of Tina Singh's sons are adventurous, and when they wanted to learn how to ride bikes – the Brampton, Ontario mom knew they'd need helmets. But it wasn't easy to find something that would fit over her sons' patka – a Sikh turban typically worn by young boys – and their traditional topknot bun. Singh, an occupational therapist decided that there was a need for something, and she took it upon herself to invent one. Singh's multisport helmets have three different safety certifications – the Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC), EN-1078, and ASTM – and can be used by children over the age of 5 when they're cycling, skateboarding, kick-scootering or inline skating. Have you ever had an idea for an invention of some kind because you could not find what you needed in stores or online?

Xu Haoyang from China's Yunan province was less than a year old when diagnosed with Menkes disease, a congenital disorder arising from mutations in the ATP7A gene. Patients show severe neurological defects and typically do not live beyond three years. There is currently no cure for Menkes. To save his son, Haoyang's father Xu Wei, who has a high school education, taught himself chemistry and biology to build a home laboratory to synthesize copper histidine, a chemical shown to reduce Menkes symptoms but is not available in China. The father's story of love and determination made international news while also generating debate over DIY medicine. And, as luck would have it, VectorBuilder Inc. just last August, announced that their first human trial of an innovative gene therapy drug candidate for Menkes disease, and the little boy whose father gave him a fighting chance, was chosen as the candidate. His father just might have bought him the time he needed. Do you think you could do something like this to save someone's life?
