Whip-cracking in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Early on Easter Monday (Pondělí velikonoční), boys go around and cautiously whip girls with their pomlázkas, which is a whip made by fastening and twisting young willow twigs together. As they carefully whip the girls, the boys sing a carol. The girls will then give the boys an egg and tie a ribbon around the pomlázka. The whipping is thought to bring fertility to the girls for the rest of the year. Have you ever been to the Czech Republic or Slovakia?

The witches of Easter in Finland. In Finland, the tradition of "witches" during Easter, known as "virvonta," involves children dressing up as witches or old women and going door-to-door with decorated willow branches, offering blessings in exchange for treats. This practice combines elements of an old Russian Orthodox ritual with a Swedish and Finnish tradition of children playfully warding off perceived evil spirits. Does this sound like a fun tradition to you?

A time to splash out, Hungary. In Hungary, a tradition called "locsolkodás" involves men and boys reciting poems and then "sprinkling" women and girls with perfume or, in some cases, even water on Easter Monday. This practice is a longstanding custom, sometimes seen as a playful and sometimes even a more dramatic chase involving buckets of water. In historic times, the water was considered a way to keep healthy and fertile. Now, it's just a fun tradition. Does this sound like something you'd enjoy participating in?

The Great Easter Bunny Hunt in New Zealand. While the rest of the world hunts for Easter eggs hidden around the house, the good folk of Otago grab their guns for the annual 'Great Easter Bunny Hunt'. The idea is to rid farmlands of 'invasive pests', with over 500 hunters vying for the coveted trophy and the $NZ 3,500 prize money. With over 10,000 rabbits meeting their maker each year, the Easter Bunny sensibly gives this corner of New Zealand a miss. Have you ever lived in an area where it was necessary to cull destructive wildlife?
