There were some things I was taught at school or memorized just long enough to pass the exam on the subject that I have since discovered were not worth learning because they were wrong anyway. I must admit that Geography was not one of my favorite subjects so we might as well start there. Here are some non-factual geographic facts.

Which of these three geographic facts were you aware were untrue?

The South Pole and Antarctica ore not the same thing. There are actually four South Poles, The Geographic Pole, The Geomagnetic Pole, The Magnetic Pole and The Inaccessible Pole. Antarctica meanwhile is a continent that seven countries lay claim to and have bases there. The 4 poles are located quite a distance apart on it.

Big as it may be, you can't see the Great Wall of China from space, even if you know where to look. It is too narrow and the material used to build it was from the local area it passes through and tends to be the same color as a result. In fact you can't se any man made structure from outer space (with the naked eye anyway).

Greenland is much smaller than Africa even though they look close to the same size on the most common map we use (The Mercator Projection). To see a more realistic map, check out the Robinson Projection (see illustration). This problem is caused by trying to depict a round object on a flat surface.

Here are three more geographic facts that needed to be updated. Which were you aware of?

Africa is much bigger than we think. Maps were originally drawn up for navigation purposes and had to be able to show lines of latitude and longitude. This required the earth to be compressed north to south so that everything could be shown centered on the equator east to west and between the poles north to south.

Both Canada and Russia can fit inside Africa with lots of room left over for a few other countries.

The River Nile is no longer considered to be the longest river in the world. More exact exploration using modern tools now says that record goes to The River Amazon by about 60 miles. If you want to be eaten by nasty bugs, a boat cruise on either one will do.

And three more. Which were you aware of?

There is no defined line between Europe and Asia. Some depict a line using mountains, some use lakes and some use rivers. Some countries in and around the borders move the border to suit political and economic goals.

The world may or may not have seven continents. It depends on where you went to school. Some are taught that The Americas are one continent. Some exclude Antarctica all together making five continents and some even say only land masses surrounded by water count as continents making the list to be Antarctica, America, Afro-Eurasia, and Australia - giving just four of them.

Queen Elizabeth was not Queen Elizabeth 2nd even though the English would like to call her that and say so on British coins. Queen Elizabeth was the second queen of that name for England but the only queen (so far) for The United Kingdom and Canada. And so she really is Queen Elizabeth 1st. Or she was until she died. Don't get me started about King Charles!

Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Northern France share Celtic languages of Goidelic and Brittonic origins that predate English and this allows people from those countries to converse without the English listening in. English is an amalgamation of several languages which is the (only?) reason it has become so widely used worldwide as a second language. This is now being taught in schools in Scotland (but not in England).
